QS department site visit to shophouses

The Quantity Surveying department of Kolej Laila Taib conducted an educational site visit to shophouses project at Jalan Wong King Huo, Sibu on 1st November 2019. The 1.5 hour site visit was participated by 24 students and 2 lecturers from QS departments.

The main objective of this site visit was to provide an outdoor learning opportunity to QS students to gain extra knowledge and experience about the shophouses construction.

The project is developed by Tang Yu Chiang Construction Sdn Bhd which consists of 2 blocks of shophouses.  The 1st block comprises of total 10 units (5 units 4-storey shophouses and 5 units 3-storey shophouses) and 2nd block comprises of 9 units 3-storey shophouses.   The site visit was led by Mr. Lau, Site Supervisor from Tang Yu Chiang Construction Sdn Bhd, who explained to students about the various building elements available on site.   Mr. Lau introduced to students the layout of column formwork and also different types of reinforcement bars used.

In addition, the students also had the experience of seeing themselves the fabrication of reinforcement cage for columns and beams from the site visit.  This visit indeed was an eye-opening for the students to the real world of building construction.
